Conscious Popular Representation: Why Does Electing Our Parliament Representatives Matter?

As part of its efforts to promote political and civic awareness, GLOCA organized an engaging public dialogue session entitled: “Conscious Popular Representation: Why Does Electing Our Parliament Representatives Matter?” on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at its office in the Al-Muhafaza district of Aleppo.

The session aimed to raise awareness about the importance of effective participation in the upcoming parliamentary elections, to explain the mechanisms for choosing candidates, and to emphasize the citizen’s role in shaping a Parliament that truly represents the people's will and serves national interests.

Key Discussion Topics:

  • Why is Parliament a fundamental tool for reform and state-building?

  • How does an individual vote influence the formation of the legislature?

  • What are the intellectual and social criteria for selecting candidates?

  • How can we ensure national programs that reflect popular will?

The session was marked by dynamic interaction and insightful political and social debates. Participants exchanged ideas on the electoral vote as a peaceful tool for change and the shift from a culture of disengagement to one of participation and accountability. Discussions emphasized the need for mature, values-based decision-making when selecting candidates who genuinely advocate for public concerns.

There was consensus among participants that elections are not merely a constitutional duty but a vital opportunity to rebuild state institutions on the foundation of transparency and civic engagement. This requires a broad political consciousness and the active inclusion of youth, women, and marginalized groups in public life.

GLOCA’s Commitment to Civic Engagement

This session is part of a broader series of initiatives led by GLOCA across various Syrian governorates to establish safe civic spaces that encourage open dialogue, promote civic education, and empower citizens to play an active role in shaping their country’s future.
