Transitional Justice Webinar: Concepts and Comparative Experiences

Event Summary

On 21 June 2025, Advancing Civil Society - GLOCA organized a webinar titled “Transitional Justice between Literature and Different Experiences,” delivered by Nours Al-Abdullah and facilitated by Abdulrahman Al-Miqdah. The webinar engaged 68 participants and focused on transitional justice concepts, mechanisms, and comparative experiences.

Webinar Focus
The session introduced the conceptual foundations of transitional justice and explored both judicial and non-judicial mechanisms, including courts, truth commissions, community-based approaches, and the right to truth. It also reviewed selected international and Arab experiences and discussed what lessons may be relevant to Syria.

Key Outputs
Participants developed a stronger understanding of transitional justice as a framework for addressing past violations, supporting accountability, recognizing victims, and contributing to reconciliation and peacebuilding. The webinar also opened space for discussion on the Syrian context and the importance of linking truth, justice, reparations, and guarantees of non-recurrence.

Key Learning
The webinar emphasized that transitional justice is not a ready-made model, but a context-sensitive process shaped by victims’ needs, social memory, legal frameworks, and political realities. It also highlighted the importance of documentation, truth-seeking, and civil society participation.

Impact
The session strengthened legal and civic awareness among participants and encouraged deeper engagement with future discussions on justice, accountability, and post-conflict recovery in Syria.
