On April 5, 2023, the Shabab PRO Platform, one of the projects of Advancing Civil Society - GLOCA, organized a political seminar titled “Foreign Interventions in the Syrian Crisis and Restoring the Syrian Role.”

The seminar was presented by writer and journalist Samira Al-Masalma, former Editor-in-Chief of Tishreen Newspaper and former Vice President of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces. It was moderated by journalist Aisha Sabri, Content Manager at Advancing Civil Society - GLOCA and supervisor of the Shabab PRO team.

The discussion examined the roles of states involved in the Syrian conflict and how their influence evolved following the launch of the Astana process in early 2017 and the 2020 ceasefire agreement in Idlib.

The seminar also addressed the fragmentation of the Syrian opposition into multiple groups with differing political agendas, alongside the decline of meaningful international support. It explored the opposition’s loss of Arab backing amid normalization with Bashar al-Assad and its growing distance from its popular base.

The session emphasized the role of Syrian youth in driving internal change, influencing political realities, and contributing to the reform and renewal of opposition structures.
