Overview
On 13 May 2025, Advancing Civil Society - GLOCA held a physical discussion session in Aleppo titled “Islamic Psychology.” The session was delivered and facilitated by Dr. Mohammad Abu Hilal, with the participation of 29 participants from different professional and community backgrounds.
Session Focus
The session explored Islamic psychology as an integrative approach that connects spiritual values with contemporary psychological understanding. It addressed how Islam views the human self, and how faith, ethics, and spiritual practices can contribute to psychological protection, stability, and wellbeing.

The concept of the self in Islam through the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Differences between Western and Islamic psychology.
Faith as a protective factor for mental health.
Ethical considerations in psychological support from an Islamic perspective.
Islamic therapeutic models, including Qur’an, remembrance, and certainty.

Key Outputs
Participants gained a clearer understanding of Islamic psychology and its relevance to mental health support in culturally and religiously rooted communities. The session also created a space for discussion between specialists, students, and interested participants on the role of spirituality in psychological wellbeing.
Impact
The activity encouraged critical reflection on the integration of religion and human sciences and highlighted the importance of culturally sensitive approaches to psychological support within Syrian society.
